Backyard Garden Update!

I’ve been quite busy lately, and haven’t had much time for updates, so here’s a bit about what we’ve accomplished in our backyard over the last couple of months.

It’s been a ton of work, more than I thought and we’re not even done digging up the yard yet, but we’re pretty close.  The weather’s been a bit of a downer and has really been preventing us from working;  shovelling in the mud doesn’t go so well.

We had to dig up the entire yard and sift all the junk out.  Luckily Shawna & I have had a bit of help from friends.  I’m not sure what was in the yard before but we have found some pretty odd things.  I’ve dug up  a rusted shovel, some twisted metal, a bunch of marbles, and pieces of action figures, plus a bunch of different odds and ends.

Initially we planned to turn over all the dirt and start planting, but it has taken so long to do we just started planting as we go.  There was an old pile of bricks in the yard that we’ve repurposed to create pathways throughout the garden.  They make it look pretty nice too.

So far we’ve planted zuchinni, cucumbers, green beans, fava beans, peas, lettuce, spinach, celery, cherry tomatoes, beefstake tomatoes, broccoli, kale, carrots, onions, potatoes, radishes, corn and tomatillos, as well as a whole bunch of potted herbs.  We’re basically going to have an entire produce department of a grocery store in the yard by the time we’re ready to harvest everything.

I didn’t think much would grow with all the rain and cold we’ve been having, but the zucchini’s are growing like crazy and are taking over everything.

I’m especially proud of the plants we’ve managed to grow from seed.  I even harvested my first radish the other day.  It’s so exciting!!

You get quite a sense of accomplishment growing your own food.  Mostly knowing where it comes from and knowing it’s all organic is very reassuring.

Happy gardening!
